Pet insurance offers a solution to reduce veterinary expenses in cases of illness or injury for your pet, with most plans involving a monthly payment of a few hundred dollars a year, allowing you to be reimbursed for the majority of medical costs, although hip dysplasia and preexisting conditions may not be covered; similar to regular health insurance, policyholders contribute a small portion while the insurance company covers the rest, but unlike regular health insurance, initial out-of-pocket payments are required, followed by the option to file a claim for reimbursement from the insurer.

With Pet Insurance:

  • You pay a premium every month to secure coverage if an accident or illness occurs

  • Treatments can be fully or partially reimbursed by your lender

Without Pet Insurance:

  • You pay out of pocket in full for all medical treatments

Pet insurance offers a significant advantage by reducing the financial burden of major procedures, as without it, pet owners might be unable to afford costly medical expenses, potentially leading to difficult decisions such as euthanasia; considering the substantial cost of major treatments, which can reach hundreds or even thousands of dollars per incident, investing in a pet insurance plan, with monthly premiums ranging from $30 to $40, becomes a prudent choice as it can save pet owners thousands in immediate out-of-pocket expenses for treatments like radiation therapy for cancer (up to $5,000 or $10,000) or surgeries for serious conditions (ranging from $3,000 to $6,000).

What's Excluded?

Prior to making a purchase, it is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the scope of your specific pet insurance contract. While standard policies generally cover a wide range of accidents and illnesses, certain common elements may be excluded by insurance providers. Here are the most frequently encountered exclusions:

  • Dental disease

  • Preexisting or hereditary conditions

  • Behavior issues

  • Routine check-ups, preventative care

  • Hip dysplasia

  • Grooming

Despite choosing the best insurers, it's important to note that they won't fully cover preexisting conditions, which refer to ailments your pet had before obtaining coverage. While certain insurers like Embrace may cover curable preexisting conditions, incurable ones might not be included. For pets already afflicted with untreatable illnesses, pet insurance may not offer extensive coverage.
